Universal Access

Music is a universal language. With every beat, music feeds our souls and connects us on a deeper level. Hearing it live is magical, but access to it shouldn't be a privilege. For far too long, concerts have been uninclusive to many, with limited opportunities for diverse audiences and talent to participate. The inequities in live music venues may not be evident until you experience them firsthand: When neurological complications from Long Covid impacted Mollie’s ability to stand, we found ourselves navigating a different concert experience. Going to a show and expecting a great time, while navigating a non-apparent disability, was instead tainted by confusion, frustration, and exclusion.

Everyone should have equal access to concerts regardless of their physical and cognitive abilities and should feel welcome at every venue. Many venues pay lip service to accessibility and inclusion while the reality is a different story. Under the ADA, Title III specifically outlines the requirements for concert venues to be accessible. While this is a vital first step for venues, we noticed its implementation and enforcement are often inconsistent and insufficient. Education is lacking across the board. As we have been learning more and educating ourselves, it became clear that change won't happen without a collective effort, and a demand for a more inclusive concert experience.

We believe in making the magic of live music universally accessible. Join us. We are determined to advocate for an experience that truly welcomes everyone. It's about more than just compliance; it's about creating spaces where everyone feels safe, valued, and celebrated. We are teaming up with other groups who share this vision and working on a plan for universal access in the live events space. If you would like to share your experiences or get involved, please reach out to boogie@thegroovement.co.

With love,
