We caught Rainbow Kitten Surprise at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday, September 12, for the New York City stop of their Love Hate Music Box tour. The tour comes in support of the release of Love Hate Music Box, the band’s first record in six years. Rainbow Kitten Surprise, who continue to impress their audience with their ever-developing artistry, their dynamic, nostalgic, and melodic sound, and their textured lyricism, released their debut album, Seven + Mary back in 2013, which was followed up with the release of RKS two years later.
A packed crowd showed up to see the band at the legendary Midtown venue, and they didn’t disappoint. Kicking off the evening was Medium Build (Nicholas Carpenter), a singer-songwriter originating from Anchorage, Alaska. Carpenter recently released their fifth studio album, Country, back in April. Next, the headliners took the stage and greeted an ecstatic audience, expressing their gratitude for their support, as well as for the opportunity to play at such an iconic venue. The alternative-rock indie band, featuring lead vocalist Ela Melo, Darrick "Bozzy" Keller (guitar, backup vocals), Ethan Goodpaster (electric guitar), and Jess Haney (drums), delivered an electrifying performance.
The band's setlist was a dynamic mix of fan favorites and deep cuts, perfectly suited for the iconic location. They immediately captivated the audience with their unique blend of indie rock and alternative sound, and kicked off the evening with "Peter Pan," the first song on their new album. The setlist showcased their lyrical depth and eclectic music range, and included legacy tracks like "Cocaine Jesus," "When it Lands," and “That’s My Shit.” The band also leaned into their newer material, playing songs like "Sickset," "SVO," and "Hot Pink Ice Cube" from their latest album, keeping the energy high throughout the night. Many of the crowd favorites had the audience singing and dancing along, while "It's Called: Freefall" during the encore represented a soulful and emotional highlight that left a lasting impression on all those in attendance.
Throughout the night, lead singer Ela Melo’s charismatic stage presence brought the venue to life, transforming Radio City Music Hall and bringing the audience to its feet throughout the entire duration of the show. The band’s performance was punctuated by stunning lighting and atmospheric visuals, enhancing the emotive experience for their enamored and ecstatic fans. The show was a full evening of captivating music, making it a memorable night for fans of Rainbow Kitten Surprise and alt-rock lovers alike.
Make sure to catch Rainbow Kitten Surprise on their remaining tour dates through the end of November.

What was the first concert you attended?
Backstreet Boys, Into the Millennium Tour was probably the first show specifically for me, but I’d gone with my mom to others before then!
Where are you from?
Washington D.C.
What do you do?
Partner & Director of Operations at The Wild Honey Pie creative agency, Assistant General Manager at Arlene’s Grocery.
Who/what do you draw inspiration from?
I think New York & its ability to endure and continue to be a haven for music and talent is very inspiring. The local scene in Brooklyn is what originally made me fall in love with NYC and inspired me to move here!
What does live music mean to you?
Live performances will always be my favorite way to experience music. In a world where everyone knows how to produce a perfectly edited video or track on their phone, seeing someone’s raw talent and stage presence is still unmatched for me. Going to venues that support artists and gives them a platform was what started my desire to work in the industry in the first place.
Do you play any instruments?
I don’t play, but I’m happily offstage or in the audience.
