Meet Ashton Monteiro, the dynamic founder of Sound Logic, a New York-based firm dedicated to providing comprehensive legal services to musicians, artists, and entertainment professionals. Recognizing the unique challenges and opportunities within the music industry, Ashton established Sound Logic to be more than just a law firm. It's a multifaceted platform offering legal counsel, business strategy, community engagement, and even a burgeoning sync licensing library. With a passion for music and a commitment to empowering creatives, Ashton and Sound Logic are making a significant impact on the independent music scene and beyond. Let's dive deeper into Ashton's journey and perspectives.

What was your first concert?
My first concert was Bruce Springsteen, and it made such an impact that I've seen him perform another 20+ times since then. His energy and authenticity on stage are unmatched and that experience really shaped my appreciation for live music and the emotional connection it creates between the artist and the audience.

Where are you from?
I’m originally from New Jersey, and while I’ve been fortunate to have a career in NYC, I still live in New Jersey. I enjoy the balance it gives me, living near the energy of the city while having the space and quieter atmosphere that New Jersey offers.

What do you do?
As the owner of Sound Logic, I provide legal services to musicians, artists, and entertainment professionals. I help them navigate contracts, protect their intellectual property, represent clients in litigation, and offer legal counsel and business strategy. Sound Logic has 5 business verticals:

  1. Memberships - regular strategy sessions, and a host of different perks and member benefits
  2. Transactional Law Services - Contracts, Copyrights, Trademarks, Business Formation, etc.
  3. Litigation - handling of disputes and the facilitation of varying conflict resolution processes
  4. Legal Products - Contract Templates, Legal Guides, etc.
  5. A Sync Library that we are formally launching this year, to help generate more placements in TV and Film for our clients and members. We did a soft launch in 2024 and were able to secure 6 placements for clients.

In addition to our legal services, we are also committed to community engagement. We have held several artist showcases in Brooklyn, NY as well as Newark, NJ, hosted networking mixers, sponsored events by local non-profit organizations committed to the arts, and offer learning workshops, free toolkits and learning guides to creatives.

Who/what do you draw inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from the artists and entrepreneurs I work with—their creativity, resilience, and passion for their craft keep me motivated every day. I’m also inspired by the power of music itself, how it brings people together, and the ability it has to influence and shape culture.

In terms of individuals, I admire figures who have successfully merged artistry with business, such as Dr. Dre, who’s made a mark both in music and entrepreneurship. I am also inspired and impressed by LaRussel. I think he is brilliant and has paved the way for Indie Artists.

What does live music mean to you?
Live music is church for me. It’s not just about the music, but the energy, the connection, the freeing of mind and body, and the shared experience is magic. It is very spiritual and cleansing. There's something raw and authentic about seeing music performed live and the instantaneous feedback loop between artist and audience. You can see the same artist perform the same set on the same tour and each show can feel entirely different just based on the vibe of the crowd. This is why I am always super committed to bringing great energy to every show. It's a wonderful stress release that keeps me coming back for more and is a reminder of why music matters, beyond just recordings and streaming.

Liv Kat

Liv Kat is a sonic architect who thoughtfully bridges the worlds of music, design, and physical space. As a content creator, DJ, and music curator, Liv specializes in crafting the bespoke audio programming that transforms ordinary rooms into immersive sensory experiences. Whether she is building a custom soundtrack, spinning a live performance, or shaping a brand activation, Liv gives hospitality groups, wellness centers, and art galleries the perfect auditory backdrop to elevate their space. Powered by the chill, textured rhythms of trip-hop, nu-disco, and jazz, her work tastefully maps the intersection of sound, mood, and atmosphere.

Following a Water + Music event, we caught up with Liv to talk early concert memories, inspiration, and the power of live music.

What was the first concert you attended?
The concert that really stands out as one of my first was seeing John Mayer perform at The Gorge Amphitheatre in the mid-2000s. His stage presence was incredible, and at one point he played the guitar with his tongue… I was blown away!

Where are you from?
I'm originally from the West Coast (California and Oregon), but I've been living in NYC for eight years.

What do you do?
I'm a content creator, DJ, and music curator, which means I design the sound and music programming for physical spaces, from hospitality and restaurant groups to wellness centers and art galleries.

Who/what do you draw inspiration from?
I'm obsessed with sonic ambiance: how sound can elevate a beautiful physical space, whether that's a hotel lobby, a lounge, or a pilates studio. I draw inspiration from artists whose sound shapes mood and emotion, spanning trip hop, nu disco, jazz, and deep house, with favorites like Zero 7, Air, Thievery Corporation, and Ella Fitzgerald. I'm also drawn to interior design and architecture, and how spaces like the Getty Museum in LA or Hôtel Costes in Paris use sound and design together to create atmosphere.

What does live music mean to you?
Community, connection, and catharsis. It's one of the few places left where a room full of strangers can feel like a shared experience.

Do you play any instruments?
I grew up playing clarinet, piano, and guitar. That technical foundation has been a huge asset in my DJing career.
